Saturday, June 20
Imperial Beach, CA
Event Overview:
See Spot surf during the Loews Dog Surfing Competition – the nation’s original surfing competition for man’s best friend. There’s no dog paddling for these surf dogs. Canine counterparts are invited to hang 10 (errr, 20) for a great cause..
Last year, close to 60 brave surf dogs took to the waves and thousands of spectators gathered to watch the dog surfing event unfold. The competition garnered national and international media attention, and more than $10,000 was raised for the resort’s non-profit partner, Modest Needs Foundation. This year’s event should be even better.
Schedule:
10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Optional practice session for registered dogs
11 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. Category One: Small Surf Dogs (40 pounds and under)
11:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Category Two: Large Surf Dogs (41 pounds and over)
12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Category Three: Tandem Surfing for Surf Dogs & Humans
1:45 p.m. Awards CeremonyJudging Process:
Judging will be conducted by Mayor Jim Janney, Mayor of Imperial Beach; Kathleen Cochran, General Manager of Loews Coronado Bay Resort; and Teevan McManus, Owner of Coronado Surfing Academy. Each dog and team will have three waves (or chances) to impress the judges and will be scored on confidence level, length of ride and overall ability to “grip it and rip it.”
Prizes:
If your dog’s a surfing champion, you’ll score a ton of great prizes, including a getaway at Loews Coronado Bay Resort … and endless bragging rights that come with owning the waves of San Diego.
Competition Fees:
$50 for Category One or Two, $55 for Category Three (if registered by June 19). Fees also include a competition metal and a great goody bag filled with treats. All proceeds will benefit the resort’s non-profit partner, Modest Needs Foundation. General admission is free.
